Jewelry Care
We want your Barefoot Creations to last you for a lonnnnnng time & keeping your jewelry dry is best for preservation and longevity... however our Gold Vermeil and Gold filled pieces can survive being worn in the water occasionally, if you stay mindful and show them a little love!
Jewelry Business owners will claim to sell “waterproof & Non-tarnishing” pieces but neglect to tell you the rest and it’s not as simple as selling waterproof or non-waterproof materials. Unfortunately, nearly every material will tarnish eventually, unless solid gold.
learning about the kind of jewelry you buy and staying mindful of the care it requires, will help to extend the life of your barefoot creations... even if worn in the water ☻.
Please read through the care recommendations below, and reach out through our contact form for any further care or warranty questions!
With love,
Kelly B.
Let’s dive into how to care for your piece depending on its materials-
the #1 most important tip for all materials is to Avoid perfumes, fragrances, sunscreen, hairspray or scented lotions on all jewelry. The harsh chemicals in those products can/will speed up tarnishing.
Gold Vermeil & Gold Filled Pieces
Gold Vermeil jewelry is affordable and a high quality alternative to solid gold. It has a sterling silver base with a layer of gold plating at least 2.5 microns thick. It’s hypoallergenic and suitable for all skin types, and is good for everyday wear.
Gold Filled jewelry is made by bonding a genuine layer of gold onto a base metal with heat and pressure. this creates a permanent bond that contains 100+ times more gold than gold-plated jewelry. It’s hypoallergenic and suitable for all skin types, and is good for everyday wear.
Care Instructions for Gold Vermeil & Gold Filled Jewelry
- clean your jewelry with warm sudsy water and pat dry with a soft cloth. never rub it after washing as this can cause discoloration.
- keep your jewelry as dry as possible and away from humid areas. Store pieces in cool, dry place-such as an anti-tarnish pouch or case. This will help to protect your pieces when they are not being worn. Remove before sleeping.
- take extra care around saltwater, chlorine, perfumes, and lotions, as they can tarnish your jewelry faster. It’s important to try and keep your jewelry clean and dry when you can, but stay mindful and care for them afterwards
Antiqued Gold & Plated Pieces
antiqued gold refers to a specific type of finish or treatment applied to gold jewelry to give them an aged or vintage appearance. the antiquing process involves intentionally darkening or oxidizing the surface of the gold to create a patina or tarnished effect, which gives the piece a sense of history and character.
Gold plated jewelry is Most affordable and often called Costume jewelry. It will tarnish eventually and is Best to avoid all contact with water, sweat, etc.
Care Instructions for Gold plated Jewelry
-Avoid getting wet in any way. Remove before shower, bath, beach, pool, physical activity/ exercise etc.
- keep your jewelry as dry as possible and away from humid areas. Store pieces in cool, dry place-such as an Gold Plating will wear away, (that’s why pieces are more affordable) so if you forget, pat dry as soon asap

Pearl Pieces
The Keshi Pearls we use are real / genuine freshwater pearls and not a faux manufactured pearl. With that in mind, these pearls came from the water so they are waterproof in a sense but it's never recommended to wear pearls in the bath, shower, pool or any other swimming area, or use perfumes or lotions in the area where you will wear your pearls. The pearls will loose their luster and become pitted by chemicals and soaps so try to avoid wearing your pearls (real or faux) in water.

Sterling Silver Pieces-
-Water/sweat generally does not damage sterling silver. *But* water does cause silver to oxidize (darken) more quickly, and what type of water and the chemicals in it has an impact on how much it will cause your silver change color. Try to dry pieces off as best as possible.
